No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
